17 - 18 Apr 2010   "Music of Horace Silver"   INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED

These courses are aimed at musicians of all ages and will also suit those who find it difficult to attend our courses that include weekdays. The courses are themed focusing on a particular jazz style or playing the music of a well-known jazz artist.

The Music of Horace Silver

Exploring the enduring music of pianist and composer Horace Silver, a founder of what became known as ‘hard bop’ or ‘soul jazz’. Silver came to prominence in the 1950s as an instrumentalist and bandleader. His tightly rehearsed groups became known for their great sense of swing, while retaining an essentially soulful sound. Many of Silver's compositions such as "The Preacher," "Song For My Father’" "Nica's Dream," and "Sister Sadie," have become true jazz classics and are played around the world.

Essential material for this course:

Hal Leonard Jazz Play Along Vol 36 Horace Silver preferred
Jamey Aebersold Jazz Series Vol 17 Horace Silver optional

St Faith’s school offers modern facilities and easy access to the city centre. Cambridge itself has some fantastic historical buildings to discover, not least within its world famous university. The city also boasts a large number of parkland areas, some great places to eat and drink and year round artistic events.
