Our Jazz Weekenders make ideal short break courses and this year, in conjunction with The Music Workshop Scotland we are running several of these courses during 2007 including Cambridge. The courses each focus on a particular jazz style or the music of a jazz artist and are set at differing levels depending on the theme. Working in groups the courses are great for developing stylistic awareness, improve skills, and group playing. As there is no public performance at the end of the course this affords more freedom to explore the music over the 2 days.

3-DAY COURSES

CAMBRIDGE and GLASGOW (Beginner/Intermediate)

The 3-day summer courses have become very popular over the years and take place in Cambridge and Glasgow. They are very much aimed at musicians with either no jazz experience or those who want to further develop their existing skills. One of the main benefits for a lot of students is the opportunity to meet and play with other musicians who are interested in jazz, whilst refreshing their own musical skills and goals. It’s always good to see the new faces at each course alongside the many returning students who come and ‘top up’ their playing experience. Groups are typically around 12 in number and each course finishes with a performance.

EDINBURGH JAZZ SUMMER SCHOOL CONCERT 2005

Jazz on a Summers Weekend / Fettes College >>
BBC Radio 3 talks to course leaders Rob Hall and Ged Brockie. Edinburgh Jazz Summer School leaders Rob Hall and Ged Brockie relax in the grounds of Fettes College a few moments before chatting to Helen Mayhew live on BBC Radio 3's 'Jazz Line Up' programme. Students from the course performed on the main stage directly after a broadcast by trumpet player Colin Steele's quintet, followed by a set from the Tutor's Quartet. This high profile event was organised by Bill Kyle, owner of the Jazz Bar Edinburgh where students also performed a great gig earlier in the week.

RHYTHM SECTION VOLUNTEERS

To achieve balanced instrumentation in the ensembles we sometimes need to top up on bassists/drummers. If you are either a semi-pro jazz musician or a jazz music student interested in playing on a course please apply by sending us your current musical CV. On residential courses accommodation may be provided.

We hope to see you on one of the summer courses and please feel free to get in touch with us any time!
